Tennis Tops Becker 8-1
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over Becker College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference matchup at the Mack Tennis Courts.
After taking all three doubles matches, Mitchell wrapped up the victory by winning five of six singles matches. The Mariners improved to 3-2 overall (2-2 NECC) while the Hawks dropped to 2-3 overall (2-3 NECC).
Zachary Simmons and Graham Cavanaugh teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and also picked up points in singles play. Simmons topped Bernardo MacAroun at No. 1 singles by finals of 6-3, 6-2 while Cavanaugh bested Aaron Peterson by scores of 6-3, 7-5.
Adam Diaz and Orson Sinclair won an 8-4 final at No. 2 doubles while Randy Coons and Chris McKeon came away with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Sinclair moved on to record a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tyler Newsome at No. 4 singles, and Coons didn't drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. Michael Berman picked up the final singles point for Mitchell with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Becker's lone point came courtesy of Brittan Morris at No. 3 singles. He bested Diaz in straight sets by finals of 6-2, 6-4.
Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College on Monday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. Becker returns to action on Sunday, April 6 at Wheelock College at 11 a.m.
