Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 to Coast Guard in OT
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer
team suffered a 1-0 setback in extra time to the Coast Guard
Academy on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
John Epperly netted his first career goal with 1:54 remaining in
the first overtime period to snap a scoreless tie. He scored on a
header off a feed from John Rendon from the right side. Coast Guard
improved to 2-2-0 with the victory while Mitchell dropped to
2-2-0.
The Bears had several good chances to score in regulation but were
turned back by the Mitchell defense and junior goalkeeper Kevin Woodford. Epperly nearly had a goal in the 23rd minute, but his
shot was stopped at the goal line by senior co-captain Terrence Mulhern and secured by Woodford.
Coast Guard continued its attack and would have taken the lead
again was it not for a spectacular save by Woodford. Brett Godiksen
blasted a shot that looked destined to find the upper left corner
of the goal, but Woodford leaped and punched it away to keep the
game scoreless.
Mitchell attempted 10 shots in the contest but challenged
goalkeeper Chris Tarbell only once. The Bears held an 18-10
advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. Tarbell finished
with one save while Woodford recorded eight.
Mitchell returns to action against Albertus Magnus College on
