NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer College men's soccer team scored twice in the opening half, building a 2-0 lead which they would not relinquish en route to a 2-1 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt at Alumni Field.
The Chargers jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Kaden Lewis in the 6th minute of play, and doubled their advantage on a Judson DiMaria goal just over 20 minutes later. The Mariners cut the deficit in half at the 31:05 mark when sophomore Nathan Da Cruz (Seymour, Conn.) punched a shot past the Colby-Sawyer goalkeeper for his team-leading fourth goal of the fall. Defense would own the day from there on out, as neither team managed to score another goal.
Da Cruz and freshman Sean Khan (Wethersfield, Conn.) led the Mariners with two shot attempts each, however Mitchell was outshot by the Chargers 18-8, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Colby-Sawyer also had five corner kick opportunities to just two for the home squad.
Mitchell sophomore Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) made five saves across 90 minutes in goal, while Yener Bartolon picked up in the win, recording one save along the way.
The Mariners (1-11-1, 1-8 GNAC) return to their home turf on Tuesday, October 15, when they host Dean College at 4:00 pm in a GNAC matchup. The Chargers (6-8, 3-6 GNAC) will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they host New England College on Tuesday, October 15.
