Pair of Second Half Goals Send Elms Past Women’s Soccer
CHICOPEE, Mass. – After playing to a 1-1 tie during the first half, the Elms College women's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to push past Mitchell College 3-1 during a GNAC match on Wednesday night at Leary Field.
The Blazers wasted no time in jumping on top, scoring less than two minutes into the match when Kelly Malheiro capitalized off a blocked shot by Mitchell keeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), which worked its way free and was sent home. The Mariners delivered an equalizer goal with 27:17 remaining in the opening half when a goal kick by Elms ended up in the possession of a charging Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.). The freshman pushed the ball into the penalty area, pulling the keeper out of the net, and at the last moment dished it off to Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.), who netted her team-high fourth goal of the season. The assist was the first of the season for Roman, and tied her for the team-lead in that category.
The score would remain knotted at 1-1 into the second half, but a goal by Caroline Wilcox in the 48th minute and Jamie McDonough in the 53rd minute would give the Blazers all they needed, as goalkeeper Gianna Liquori held the Mariners scoreless over the final 45 minutes.
Rahel Scully (Kingston, N.H.) also managed a shot on goal for Mitchell, who were outshot 18-3 in the contest, 13-2 in shots on net. The Blazers also held a 5-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Gemma Landry logged all 90 minutes in goal for Mitchell and turned away 10 shots, the third time this season she has recorded double-digit saves in a game.
Gianna Liquori made two saves in goal for Elms to pick up the win, while Kelly Malheiro added an assist to go with her goal, setting up McDonough for the final score of the game.
The Mariners (2-8-1, 0-8-1 GNAC) will return home following a four game road-trip, hosting Colby-Sawyer College in a conference tilt on Saturday, October 7th, at 1:00 pm. Elms (6-5, 5-4 GNAC) will host the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday, October 7th.
